Summary
The present report contains a summary of the discussions of the public consultation
on the human rights of older persons held by the Office of the United Nations High
Commissioner for Human Rights in compliance with Human Rights Council resolution
21/23. The consultation focused on the main challenges to the enjoyment of the human
rights of older persons and on good practices in the protection and promotion of their
human rights, and included a one-day meeting, which was held in Geneva on 15 April
2013, as well as written contributions from Member States and observers, national human
rights institutions, regional organizations, civil society organizations and academic
institutions. The issues discussed included examples of specific protection against age
discrimination and ageism, bodies with a mandate to protect the rights of older persons and
to combat age discrimination, and challenges and good practices in the areas of the
economic and social rights of older persons – including the rights to health, work and social
protection – and of the protection of older persons against violence, neglect and abuse.
