A/HRC/33/40
• We are not aware of a single allegation to the effect that human rights are violated as
a result of the application of WTO agreements.
• The Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE) provides a forum where WTO
Members share their experiences, concerns and best practices on trade and
environmental policies.
• It has contributed to identifying and understanding the relationship between trade
and the environment in order to promote sustainable development (“triple win
opportunities” for trade, development and the environment).
• Members of the CTE are also regularly briefed by specialized environmental
institutions on topical subjects in the intersection between trade and environment.
• In recent years, several important issues have been discussed in the CTE including:
efforts to combat illegal logging; sustainability labelling schemes; carbon foot-print
methodologies; renewable energy initiatives.
