A/HRC/35/24/Add.1
Encouraging and supporting the role of the intellectual community and civil society
organizations
124. The Special Rapporteur calls upon civil society organizations and the
intellectual community, as well as students, parents and community associations, to
join with the Government in fostering a culture that values education as a human
right, a noble cause and a social responsibility in which private profit has no place.
Research, events and expert consultations in that regard should be encouraged and
supported.
125. The Special Rapporteur welcomes the transforming landscape of education in
Chile; it affirms that education is not a privilege of the rich, but everyone’s inalienable
right. The efforts being made by Chile to change the current education system and to
lay the foundations for future cultural change must be supported. The international
community, the United Nations and all stakeholders should not miss the opportunity
to support Chile in its efforts to safeguard the right to education against the forces of
privatization and to preserve education as a public good. The principles of social
justice and equity should be at the forefront of the reforms ushered into the education
system to build a better Chile for the current and future generations.
