(g)
Adhere to the Protect, Respect and Remedy Framework for Business
and Human Rights and best practices such as the International Cyanide Management
Code for the gold mining industry; the Environmental Excellence in Exploration (E3);
the Extractives Industry Transparency Initiative; the Global Reporting Initiative; the
International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) Sustainable Development
Framework; the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises; the Towards
Sustainable Mining (TSM) Guiding Principles; the United Nations Global Compact.
71.
In accordance with their obligations as subject to public international law,
development finance institutions should:
(a)
Undertake human rights due diligence to ensure that potential impacts
on human rights are assessed and addressed. Intermediaries that have substantial
local ownership and are equipped to make investments that are in line with the
development objectives and approach of the development finance institutions should
be prioritized;
(b)
Ensure that grievance mechanisms conform fully to principles outlined
in the Protect, Respect and Remedy Framework such that they are legitimate,
accessible, predictable, equitable, transparent and compatible with internationally
recognized human rights standards. The first comprehensive review of the World
Bank’s safeguard policies over the next year presents an opportunity to incorporate
these recommendations and ensure that its investments in extractive industries do not
cause or contribute to human rights impacts.
