Urgent actions
371. One case was sent to the Government of the Sudan under the urgent action procedure. The
case concerned Saida Asil Nur Oshar, allegedly arrested on 6 September 2008, by members of
the National Intelligence and Security Service in El Geneina in West Darfur.
General allegation
372. Information was submitted by credible sources to the Working Group concerning obstacles
allegedly encountered in the implementation of the Declaration. This information was
transmitted to the Government.
373. Credible sources reported that following an attack on 10 May 2008 by rebel forces on
Omdurman (one of the three towns that form the Sudanese capital of Khartoum) the Sudanese
authorities arrested hundreds of men, women and children, many of whom were subjected to
disappearance.
374. Many of those arrested were picked up in public locations, such as on public transport
and on the street. State agents are reported to have transferred an unknown number of detainees
to locations outside Khartoum, such as Shandi to the north of the capital and Port Sudan in
eastern Sudan.
375. Allegedly, many relatives of arrested or disappeared individuals reported that they have
been unable to get information on the whereabouts of their loved ones, and that the authorities
have refused to acknowledge that they are in detention.
376. Reportedly, relatives who have tried to locate detainees contacted the media or the
National Intelligence and Security Services Information Office have themselves been harassed
and risked being arrested.
377. No reply was received from the Government regarding this general allegation.
