A/HRC/16/58 United Nations General Assembly Distr.: General 21 February 2011 Original: English Human Rights Council Sixteenth session Agenda item 4 Human rights situations that require the Council’s attention Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea* Summary The present report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea covers the second half of the 2010 and the beginning of 2011. That period saw some of the most volatile situations in the Korean Peninsula since the inter-Korean war and attempts made to change the leadership in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The report touches upon economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights, and highlights the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in the country. The report might not have captured all violations of the human rights, but certainly provides an idea about the prevailing human rights and humanitarian situation in the country. A number of other issues that might not have been reflected in the report will be addressed in the Special Rapporteur’s future reports to the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council. * Late submission.
