Resolution 6/12.
Human rights and indigenous peoples: mandate
of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of
human rights and fundamental freedoms of
indigenous people
The Human Rights Council,
Bearing in mind paragraph 6 of General Assembly resolution 60/251 of 15
March 2006,
Recalling the resolutions 5/1 “Institution-building of the United Nations
Human Rights Council” and 5/2 “Code of Conduct for Special Procedures Mandateholders of the Human Rights Council” of 18 June 2007 and stressing that the
mandate-holder shall discharge his/her duties in accordance with these resolutions and
their annexes,
Recalling also resolutions 2001/57 of 24 April 2001, 2002/65 of 25 April 2002,
2003/56 of 24 April 2003, 2004/62 of 21 April 2004 and 2005/51 of 20 April 2005 of
the Commission on Human Rights entitled “Human rights and indigenous issues”,

Decides to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the
situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people for a period
of three years:
(a)
To examine ways and means of overcoming existing obstacles to the
full and effective protection of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of
indigenous people, in conformity with his/her mandate, and to identify, exchange and
promote best practices;
(b)
To gather, request, receive and exchange information and
communications from all relevant sources, including Governments, indigenous people
and their communities and organizations, on alleged violations of their human rights
and fundamental freedoms;
