A/HRC/1/L.10 page 5 II. ELECTION OF OFFICERS; ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA AND ORGANIZATION OF THE WORK OF THE SESSION A. Opening and duration of the session 1. The Human Rights Council held its first session at the United Nations Office at Geneva from 19 to 30 June 2006 (see also paragraphs 20 and 21 below). It held 24 meetings (see A/HRC/2006/SR.1-24)1 during the session. 2. The session was opened by Mr. Jan Eliasson, President of the General Assembly at its sixtieth session. 3. At the 1st meeting, on 19 June 2006, Mr. Kofi Annan, the United Nations Secretary-General, made a statement. 4. At the same meeting, at the 10th meeting, on 23 June, and at the 20th meeting, on 29 June, Ms. Louise Arbour, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, made statements. 5. Also at the same meeting, Ms. Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Laureate for 2004, made a statement. B. Attendance 6. The session was attended by representatives of States members of the Council, observer States of the Council, observers for non-member States of the United Nations and other observers, as well as observers for United Nations entities, specialized agencies and related organizations, intergovernmental organizations and other entities, national human rights institutions and non-governmental organizations.
