A/HRC/10/47 page 2 Summary In its resolution 2005/84, the Commission on Human Rights recognized the need for intensified efforts to ensure universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, so as to reduce vulnerability to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and to prevent HIV/AIDS-related discrimination and stigmatization, in particular in relation to women, children and vulnerable groups. States and other actors were invited to continue to take steps to ensure the respect, protection and fulfilment of HIV/AIDS-related human rights, as contained in the guidelines on HIV/AIDS and human rights.1 A previous report on this issue was submitted to the fourth session of the Human Rights Council in 2007.2 This report provides an update on actions taken by Governments, United Nations organs, programmes and specialized agencies, international and non-governmental organizations to this end. It concludes that, while some progress has been made in the global response to the epidemic a number of human rights challenges remain, which pose barriers to achieving universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. 1 E/CN.4/1997/37, annex I. 2 A/HRC/4/110.
