The event marked the first time a Sri Lankan state institution commemorated the missing and disappeared. Over 600 members of families of missing and disappeared persons from across the country, civil society organisations, Members of Parliament and religious dignitaries attended the event. The OMP invited a number of family members of missing and disappeared persons to speak at the event representing the multiple contexts and regions in which persons have disappeared in Sri Lanka. Amnesty Amnesty International is unaware of efforts on this front. Families of the Disappeared There is a suggestion by OMP to build a memorial. The memorial for school children of Ambilipitiya incident was eradicated by the previous government. In few places on their own victims have built up some small memorials. “Monument for the Disappeared “at Seeduwa is the biggest one built by a CSO, (FoD). 116 117 OMP Act, above n 16, Sections 13(1),(j). OMP Act, above n 16, Sections 13(1),(k),(i). The Working Group regrets that from the information received, the recommendation to sponsor memorials for all victims regardless of ethnicity or support provided to civil society remembrance activities has yet to be implemented by the Government. The Working Group re-iterates its concern about the limited number of memorials and spaces for people to remember and reflect, especially given the dimension of the enforced disappearances in Sri Lanka and also reiterates its concern that there is no government-supported memorial built for the victims of enforced disappearances. The Working Group calls on the Government to sponsor memorials and erect national and local moments as A/HRC/42/40/Add.1 86 Recommendations A/HRC/33/51/Add.2
