Situation during the visit A/HRC/33/51/Ad d.2 Measures taken/current situation Level of implementation and observations (to be completed by the WGEID) suffering and trauma experienced by the victims. These engagements were useful in obtaining a diversity of viewpoints, needs and interests of victims even within the same community or region. In its interim report, the Office recognised the diversity of opinions and need among victims and assured that it is committed to engaging with all affected families. However, it acknowledged that securing the confidence and trust of the relatives of the victims remains one of the main obstacles of the office due to the past experiences of the families in relation to State institutions. In a recent media statement the Chairperson of the OMP assured there would be no discrimination among the victims who seek the help of the OMP. Reiterating their commitment to a victim-centred approach, he stated that the Office is considerate towards those who wish to record statements without identification documents. He also said that the OMP is looking into the possibility of reaching out to elderly parents who are unable to visit the Office in person. 52 (b) Be fully accessible to the families of disappeared persons; ITJP The whole approach of all the TJ mechanisms does not currently include victims abroad. The ITJPSL has taken detailed statements from 300+ torture &/or sexual violence victims driven into exile AFTER the war, many of whom have also had loved ones subjected to enforced disappearance. These people are too terrified to approach the GOSL for assistance and are being failed by mental and medical health services in their countries of asylum. There is no point talking about “reconciliation” if you first drive your enemy abroad so you don’t have to deal with him/her. Government – June/July 2019 See response to 79 (a) OMP The OMP recognises the importance of ensuring timely and efficient access to its offices and over the long-term proposes to establish four regional offices, eight sub-regional offices, and 52 The Working Group welcomes information according to which regional offices of the OMP have been opened in Mannar, Matara and recently Jaffna and that further regional, sub-regional and mobile offices are planned.
